Resolution IV/16 (1982)

Guidelines for the achievement of systems of romanization

The Conference,

Reaffirming the validity of resolution 9, adopted by the First United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names, on achieving a single romanization system for each non-Roman writing system,

Recognizing, however, the difficulties involved in arriving at romanization systems agreeable to all countries,

Considering that suitable consultations are desirable, particularly within the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names,

Recommends that the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, at its next session should request the Working Group on a Single Romanization System for each Non-Roman Writing System to discuss any system that might be submitted to it and to report its findings to the Group of Experts at its following session.
