Introduction

The list has been compiled based on several public sources, mainly web maps (OpenStreetMap, Google Maps) and data from Geonames (these are mostly based on data from National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's GEOnet Names Server and therefore BGN [US Board on Geographic Names] has been marked as the source). Additionally, some explanations and stories related to geographical names have been provided.

The main author of the list is Osward Chanda (Chanda_Osward(at)student.ceu.edu), MA student in Central European University, Budapest, who compiled the gazetteer as part of his internship in August 2019. KNAB editor has added Russian transcriptions and some, mainly historical variants.

Spelling of geographical names

Official spellings have been used as much as possible. In some cases, local pronunciation (marked with ƒ) has been added if known to be different. Note that although the sound [tʃ] is marked as c in the standard orthography in most Zambian languages (Kashoki 1981), in geographical names it is marked as ch.

If coordinates have not been determined, question marks appear instead. Some large features have been given only approximate coordinates (as a rule, rounded to full minutes).

Other name variants, notes and comments. Name variants are listed, ordered by languages. Names with the same origin (various spellings of the same name) are usually grouped together.
