I have found your research fascinating! I found myself reading like a sponge, desiring to consume as much information as I an hod. Thank you! My grandfather was from Kishinev, in Bessarabia. I am interested particularly in the lives, history, and culture of Jewish people who lived in Kishinev at the turn of the century. Any information, insight, and/or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am interested history and this book was extremely interesting and fascinating. We must prevent these things from ever happening again. One way to do this is to discuss minority and ethnic matters with foreigners that you meet. This book gives you plenty of facts.

I was fascinated to discover your Web site while surfing the Internet. I have always had a keen interest in ethnic studies, with a particular focus on the minority peoples of the former Soviet Union. The obvious reason is that my maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants to the U.S. from what is now Belarus. Your Web site will probably keep me glued to my computer screen for hours on end.

My fiancee is half Chuvash, from the Chuvash republic between Nizhnii Novgorod and Kazan. I was browsing through the book and failed to find them. Perhaps I overlooked them, or, in my ignorance, failed to know another name for them or a tribal group they fall into. Can anyone help. Thank you.

The Red Book does not intend to list and describe every nation or tribe living on ex-soviet territory. The foreword lists criteria of selection what is covered in this book - basically it is about endangered nations who are nearly extinct or losing their language and identity. The Chuvash population is about 1.5 million, they have preserved their language and live mostly in autonomous republic.

I was very relieved to have found your book on the web. I was just doing my research on the USSR when I found your web page. Interesting! So far, I have not encountered such a book that dwelled into as much detials. In fact it is very useful to my thesis and I thank all you writers for that!

As a krymchak from my mother side I spent over forty five years of my life looking for my roots. Thanks to Red Book I'm happy now and feeling sad at the same time for extinct culture, for perished people.

I always enjoy good solid research and exposure on unpopular myths. One small addition I advise you to make: you forgot the ethnic Germans from the Volga, Ukraine, Bessarabia, Volhynia, Crimea...all of the persecuted under Stalin, and only recently (1962) rehabilitatd. My wife is geographer from Lomonosov University and has travelled most of former USSR. We both actively search for historic documents and Red Book is an amazing and welcome effort at broadening understanding of complex nation and regions. Congratulations.

I am interested in learning about the colonial expansion of Russia into the Soviet Union and how it has affected people who now find themselves to be minorities in the former Soviet Union. In addition I would like to know how it has affected immigration and emigration to and from the former Soviet Union. 31-05-97

Having read the Red Book in Estonian, I was pleasently surprised to find its English version in the Internet. Even though some of the material is already a bit out of date, it is still an excellent source of information for anyone interested in the national minorities of Russia. I already added a link to the article on Karelians on my Karelian page. If possible, I would like to see the material kept up to date and some links to other Internet sources added.
