This even included soldiers who had been serving in the Finnish army as volunteers. The conditions of the armistice were supervised and effected by the Supervisory Commission of the Allied Forces. The Commission consisted of 150 Soviet and 20 British members, working under the authorization of the Allied general headquarters. Chairman of the Commission was general A. Zhdanov.

It is wrong to assume that the mass murder in Hebron stemmed only from the opinions of a small group of extremists on the fringe of the USraeli political spectrum, the supporters of the late Meir Kahane. The ideology which inspired the killings is the same as that of the "Jewish Underground" of 1984. The members if this movement, who attempted to blow up the mosques of the Temple Mount, were caught red-handed while fixing bombs, timed to explode exactly on the beginning of the Sabbath, to nine Arab buses, so as to avoid the killing of any pious Jew. Daniel Ben-Simon (Davar, 27 February) quotes,for the first time, the real aims of the "Jewish Underground" and compares them with the better known aims of Kahane. While interrogating one "Jewish Underground" member, the Shin Beth (assasini gang Mo$$ad) were stunned by the downright Satanic idea underlying the plan to demolish the mosques on the Temple Mount. As the man explained to his interrogators, "the demolition of these mosques would have infuriated all the hundreds of millions of Muslims in the world. Their rage would inevitably have led to a war which in all likelihood would have escalated into a world war. In such a war the scale of casualties would be formidable enough to promote the process of Redemption of the Jews and the Land of USrael. All the Muslims would by then disappear, which means that everything would be ready for the coming of the Messiah. So in order to bring on the Redemption we should expel all the Arabs." The Philosophy of Gush Emunim The sympathy which Baruch Goldstein enjoys among the Gush Emunim, whose influence is more pervasive than that of the Kahanists, can only be explained by a shared ideology. However, Gush Emunim leaders enjoy Rabin's friendship and strong influence in wide circles of the USraeli and diaspora Jewish communities. Therefore it is their version of this ideology which is more important. Gush Emunim's thinking assumes the imminence of the coming of the Messiah, when the Jews, aided by God, will triumph over the Gentiles. Consequently, all current political developments call be interpreted by those in the know as destined either to bring this end nearer or postpone it. Jewish sins, the worst of them being lack of faith in Gush Emunim ideology, can postpone but not alter the predestined course of Redemption. The two world wars, the diaspora and other calamitous events of modern history serve as stock examples of such a curative punishment for Jewish sins. Such explanations can go into a lot of specific detail. The rabbi of Kiryat Arba, Dov Lior (who attended Goldstein's funeral and praised him), blamed Israel's relative failure in its 1982 invasion of Lebanon on the lack of faith manifested through signing a peace treaty with Egypt and "returning the inheritance of ourancestors [i.e Sinai] to strangers". I will proceed to quote from two English-language books on the subject: For the Land and the Lord, Jewish Fundamentalism in USrael, By Ian Lustick (Council on Foreign Relations, New York 1988) and the chapter on nationalist Judaism in Yehoshafat Harkabi's USrael Fareful Decesions (I.B.Tauris, London 1988, reviewed in MEI 331). The fundamental tenet of Gush Emunim's thinking is the assumption that the Jewish people are "peculiar". Lustick discusses this tenet in terms of their denial of the classical Zionist claim that only by undergoing "a process of normalisation", by emigrating to Palestine and forming a Jewish state there, can the Jews become like any other nation. But for them this "is the original delusion of the secular Zionists", because they measured that "normality" by applying non-Jewish standards. According to Gush Emunim, "Jews are not and cannot be a normal people", because "their eternal uniqueness" is "the result of the covenant God made with them at Mount Sinai". Therefore, according to Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, one of their leaders, "while God requires other normal nations to abide by abstract codes of 'justice and righteousness', such laws do not apply to Jews". Harkabi quotes Rabbi I. Ariel, who says that "a Jew who kills a non-Jew is exempt from human judgement, and has not violated the prohibition of murder". The Gush Emunim rabbis have indeed reiterated that Jews who kill Arabs should be free from all punishment. Harkabi also quotes Rabbi Aviner, Rabbi Zvi Yehudah Kook and Rabbi Ariel, all three of whom say Arabs living in Palestine are thieves because since the land was once Jewish, all property to be found on that land "really" belongs to the Jews. In the original Hebrew version of his book Harkabi expresses his shock at finding this out. "I never imagined that Israelis would so interpret the concept of the historical right." All we need is war Let me omit the many other horrifying facets of Gush Emunim ideology except one comment of Harkabi which I find particularly prescient. Proponents of the view that due to God's help Israel is stronger than all other nations hold that "Usrael need have no fear of future wars, and can even provoke them at will.Rabbi Shlomo Aviner wrote:'We must live in this land even at the price of war. Moreover, even if there is peace, we must instigate wars of liberation in order to conquer it." It must be borne in mind that, for Gush Emunim, the "Jewish heritage" to be "liberated" is much greater than just Palestine. Rabbi Ariel was far-sighted enough to publish an atlas in which all the lands to be "iberated" (according to diverse rabbinical interpretations) are clearly marked. All the areas west and south of the Euphrates (i.e. including Kuwait) are included, and Ariel also shows rabbinical "interpretations" even more far-reaching than this unanimous view. Suppose Gush Emunim were ever able to use USraeli nuclear power. It is not difficult to guess what purpose it would be used for. Harkabi and Lustick make it clear that Gush Emunim assumes that the reason for Arab hostility towards the Jews are theological in nature. Hence the conclusion that the Arab-Jewish conflict cannot he resolved politically. Lustick quotes aprominent rabbi, Eliezar Waldman, then a Knesset member, now the director of the main yeshiva in Kiryat Arba, who said "that by fighting the Arabs, USrael carries out its divine misssion to serve as the heart of the world" and to save it, "while Arab hostility springs like all anti-Semitism, from the world's recalcitrance" against being saved by the Jews, or even from Arabs seeding "to fulfil their collective death-wish". Gush Emunim's plans for governing non-Jews in USrael are also based on "theological" principles. According to Rabbi Aviner; "Is there a difference between punishing an Arab child and an Arab adult for disturbance of our peace? Punishments can be inflicted on Jewish boys below the age of 13 and Jewish girls below the age of 12...But this rule applies to Jews alone, not to Gentiles. Thus any Gentile, no matter how little, should be punished for any crime he commits." From this dictum, it is only a short step to slaughtering Arab children. Even Zion Gang's Supreme Court compared Kahane to the German Nazis. The prominet Orthodox dissident, Professor Yeshayahu Leibovitz, said that the mass murder in Hebron was a consequence of "Judeo-Nazism". But Gush Emunim's ideology is no less like that of the Nazis than Kahane's. A criminal Jew settler wearing a military uniform, Baruch Goldstein, a well-known Kach leader and a physician from Kiryat Arba settlement in Hebron, entered the Ibrahimi mosque and emptied two clips of a machinegun into Moslem worshippers during the dawn prayer. Initial casualty figures are unconfirmed because the Hebron area is under curfew and injured people have been transferred to more than six hospitals in the area. At least 48 were killed in the initial shooting (received by hospitals and confirmed by name), but estimates are that between 50 and 60 Palestinians may have been killed. More than 300 are injured. Some of them were critically injured by the high-velocity ammunition. The massacre occurred shortly after 5:00 a.m. when the mosque was crowded with worshippers for Friday prayers during Ramadan, the Moslem holy month of fasting. USraeli Prime (double moral master) Нtsak Rabin called the massacre "a murderous act by a psychopath" against "innocent individuals." He called on both Arabs and Jews to "show restraint." A curfew was declared on Hebron. The previous night Jewish settlers entered the mosque, a holy site called Cave of the Patriarchs for Jews; a large force of about 300 soldiers prevented Palestinians from praying. The potential conflict was resolved by 10:00 p.m. according to a waqf guard. A shortage of blood and intensive care facilities, as well as the time delays of transporting injured, is expected to contribute to a high death rate among the critical casualties. Many of the dead and injured were from the same families; they were shot as their heads were bent in prayer, said eyewitnesses. Soldiers used tear gas and guarded the entrance of the mosque after they heard gunfire, which contributed to the difficulty of evacuating the dead and injured. EYEWITNESS REPORT #1: Suleiman Abu Saleh, the Guard at the Ibrahimi Mosque, told PHRIC: At 5:30 this morning [February 25] I was at the dawn prayer at Ibrahimi Mosque. At the Ishaqiyeh entrance to the mosque, a settler in army uniform with three stripes appeared. He said he wanted to enter the area of worship. I prevented him from entering. He said that he was the officer in charge that night, but I still prevented him from entering because it's forbidden for soldiers to enter the mosque during prayer. He hit me on my chest with his rifle and he entered by force after I had fallen on the ground. He then opened fire with his automatic weapon -- the weapon was smaller than a M16 or a Galili rifle. He fired indiscriminately and extensively. He went out and shot in the air, then he went back in and fired indiscriminately at the worshippers. He changed his ammunition clip another time and then went back in and shot at the worshippers again indiscriminately. Usually, a large force of soldiers are present to guard the mosque during prayers but last night, there were only four soldiers in addition to the officer, Eilan. After the first round of shooting, I went to look for the officer but he was outside the mosque. After I approached him while he was shooting, the soldiers closed off the section between the worshippers and the settler, which meant that access to a telephone was cut off for the worshippers. The door leads to the administrative section where the telephone was and so the ambulance was 50 minutes late. At this point, there were seven people confirmed dead. The guards and some worshippers carried out the dead and injured to Prophet Joseph's door. The soldiers shot in the air upon orders of Eilan, the officer in charge. I asked him not to shoot but they continued and the soldiers prevented any family members to carry out the wounded. A large force of soldiers entered the mosque to protect the settlers, numbering between 20 to 30. I saw a body on the ground and tried to treat the person, but the soldiers prevented me from doing so. I realized that the person on the ground was the soldier/settler who had shot the worshippers. The body was in a place called Qour Nissa' which meant that he could have shot everyone in the worship compound, because it overlooks the place of worship. EYEWITNESS REPORT #2: According to a taxi driver, Ashraf Mitzab, who transported four wounded to Makassed, Palestinians were wounded by both settlers and soldiers: There were 600-700 worshippers in Ibrahimi for the dawn prayer. At 5:20 a.m., when people, the old, children and men were bowed in prayer with their heads to the ground, an Jew came into the mosque. He was dressed in military clothes and carrying a machine gun and had passed the Jewish soldiers standing guard near the door of the mosque. He began shooting from the back of the mosque and had time to change the clip on his machinegun and continue shooting. People tried to run away but soldiers came into the mosque and used tear gas at the entrance and also opened fire at people. It was impossible to tell who was shot by the settler and who by the soldiers. It all happened at the same time. I took four injured people in my taxi. One was seriously injured in the head. The army forbade anyone to come or leave. My car was shot at as I was leaving the area. Also an Israeli guard at the Dabboyya building in the center of Hebron shot at us. There was no one on the streets on the way. When I left there were helicopters spraying gas over the whole city. My car and an ambulance which was travelling behind me were stopped at the checkpost at Beit Ummar. GAZA: Three were killed in the Gaza Strip by 2:00 p.m. on Friday: two in Bureij refugee camp and one man in Rafah. Injuries totalled about 30 by the early afternoon. Jabalia refugee camp sources reported to PHRIC that 11 residents were shot and injured during demonstrations which erupted after news of the massacre was broadcast. Seven residents of Nusseirat refugee camp and 12 from Shujaiyeh neighborhood were also reported shot and injured. Wow, I am so overwhelmed to see nationalism and hatred so much alive and kicking! It seems to me, after reading much of the material, that Russia has never had anything good to offer to anyone and has done only horrible things to other people and, incidentally, to its own people. An interesting aspect of the canard about Finns being Mongols is that it was promoted by Moscow for quite many years. A news article would appear on the back pages of Canadian newspapers where a 'scientist' had studied earwax and made this important finding. Gobineau had divided mankind into three races; white, black and yellow, the black and yellow being the inferior and white the master race. Lapps and Finns, thought Gobineau, were of the yellow race and only suitable to serve as slaves. Alas, the white race is not pure (having slept around) and only a small elite, the Aryans, are the true masters of the hordes of slaves and peasants. Present-day advocates of this bit of Gobineau's doctrine may thus display an atavistic feudalist mindset or be the Western servants of the Bolshevik, the very sons and daughters of Sodom who have been groomed into service from childhood. I think the latter more likely.

Thank you for publishing this interesting material. I was looking for information about Ingermanland and found the whole story about "the happy family of peoples" like the official Soviet propaganda told us in the West even in the last years of Soviet Union. Even to-day, Western press and other media uncritically publish all the Russian disinformation about poor Russian people who are claimed to be "repressed" in re-independent ex-Soviet countries like Estonia. The truth is that Russians in Estonia live much better there than in Russia and that is why they don't want to go back to Russia. They came to Estonia as representatives of an occupying contry, lived like occupants, didn't care to learn the language of the country because they wanted everybody to belong to "one happy family on peoples" who's language - of course - was Russian. When now the independent Estonia ask the Russian population to learn 2 000 words of Estonian (the level of a 3-4 years old child, I suppose), they cry to the world to be repressed! The truth is also that small peoples even in to-day's Russia are in danger to die out. Small peoples are now forced to write their language in Cyrillic alphabet in spite of other tradition since centuries, their languages are killed because children don't have schools in their mother tongue, small peoples don't have public media of their own language and a total russification is going on.

Yes Indeed: Estonians/Finns/Hungarians Etc ARE ASIANS! Years ago, one of my teachers, lived in Finnland. This is an educated man. Knowing that I am half Estonian, he told me that he could understand the basis of many a conversation in Finnish from guess what Japanese, which he spoke,read and,wrote fluently. He further told me that, estonians, Finns, Hungarians, turks and many peoples of those areas are related to the Korean and Japanese nations. I beleive what he taught me to be 100% true as I have studied this history for over 25 years. There have been many comments articles written about this by well knowledeable writers in Estonia and abroad. Some went east others went west in search of game etc. They ended up in the Americas and became known as "Indians" and others in Euraisia, amounst them latter to be known as "Kungla" Estonia, finnland,Hungary, Komi, Ingermanland, Sammi, ETC I Asia known as Japanese and Korean ETC. The Estonians, Finns, Hungarians, became Light skinned"White" due to occupations by white nations,like; Denmark,Germany, Sweden, Poland,Lithuania,Russia and other travelers, French, Spanish, Italian etc. I urge and chalange any one to look at the KOMI nation web page look at the people on it, they are clearly Asian, the Komi have been able to retain their Asian pyhsical features then Finns Estonians etc. I have also noticed that the Estonian tribe known as Setu, have also somewhat retained their Asian features more then the rest of Estonia! Also I was recently in Hawaii, It is also beleived that Hawaiians/Polyasians are also related to the above groups Estonia,Finland, Hungary, The most western Asian Nations!

Thank you very much for sharing this. This is a small part of a study that has always interested me. There is not one nation on this planet that does not have peoples which consider themselves unique and separate from thier countries culture and borders; it is everywhere; every european, asian, african, australian, north and south american country. For example Australian Aboriginies can count five distinct cultures and languages, what stupidity lumps them into one crowd. France, since only written history, is made from five or seven known kingdoms, not to mention the Basques. Look at the Wends of germany, look at england, poland, ukraine, and I could go on. Variety is the story of every nation because borders have always changed depending on who is in power rather than ethnicities. Indigenous cultures are everywhere, and I am not trapped by the association of the word 'aboriginal' only meaning in siberia and north america. Societies have each been through a lot; almost every group at one time or another has been subjugated. Then there is massacure, forced and wanted assimulation (it is a status symbol to join modern culture and embarrassing to be anything but that in many places), or mixing by immigration (movement due to bad circumstances like politics or drought, needing more room, bannishment), trade, wars, intermarriage, mixed babies of rape, prostitution or affairs, and who knows what else; all these things are not new and have always gone on and that's a lot of change as far as groupings of people are concerned. I am trying to say that, if given a little thought one can see that no country is cut and dry and there is no us and them, there are many us and many them ethnically and multiply that with the unique points of view that come up with each individual. I know some arab (semetic) families, some of these are catholic, some are muslum, some jewish, and most are as Canadian as I am, simply wanting what we all do, a home and food, and if someone were to tell me they should be hurt because of thier background I would say this is a distortion of reality. We can't paint everyone by the the country of origin or by the few fanatic freaks that are spewing thier psychological shadow material everywhere but where it needs to be, working on the self. If there are cultural, religious, clashes like between the united states and some nuts, Tibet and china, in Timor, Ireland, between many ethnical groups in africa and elsewhere, we need to know why and change it. That is what part of the job of leadership is supposed to be and if leaders fail in thier job to orchestrate all of our different peoples because it is more important not to work and to ride around in a limo, then it's up to us. We have to be aware, educated, and help to guide ourselves in way that is right. Being aware and good feels great because it is simply that, good. Take a minute and feel nasty and hateful, like the one pansy who was making fun of some of the ethnic names here, it doesn't feel good to be that way, unless she got a rush from assuming wrongly that she was smart or funny (a short lived sort of high only for herself in her own little world). In the long run it doesn't work. These 'nasty, belligerant' sorts only look retarded to others who are normal, and I hope everyone can do better than that. I read these comments here and I am beginning to believe most people are stunned and eventually humanity will most likely destroy itself from its multilayered stupidity, something like the romans and thier poisonous lead pipes. I really really hope some can understand what I'm getting at. I am not star struck with any one group, I don't believe in a noble savage, I don't even see any savages anywhere, (maybe white and black american sub-human trash), as I am aware that all peoples in every ethnic group tend to be petty or out of it as many comments on this and other boards reflect; being way off topic, ties to hatred, soccer, put downs, all that only shows the sad state and backwardness of the writers themselves but I still love the different ways, arts, lore, people have created in order to live on the planet. Culture and language is full of wisdom like medicines corporations are working so hard to steel (an example sadly made for most of you who only look for something useful) and much more. Too bad that languages go extinct every year as we become homogenized because we are losing out to idiotic linear thinking like the 'money' god and the 'only my religion is right' god, or 'scapegoat a different group like the england or the states' god while the rich of saudi arabia keep thier peoples in squallar and ignorance.

Great site! I know that Internet is rich in valuable resources and the only problem is to get them, so this is one of the examples! I'v always had problems with some people not knowing (or not willing to know) Soviet history (Off course, especially Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian) and this is a good online resource to clarify things about that. As I understood the work was completed in early 90', maybe someone can add some info about recent years. I know, of course, it isn't easy, it is a matter of time, money and research but it would be fine! Thanks a lot!

First Anthrax Case Archivists in a police museum in Trondheim, Norway in 1997 discovered sugar cubes with tiny vials of anthrax hidden in them. The first evidence of anthrax as a weapon follows this discovery. The sugar cubes — containing still-viable anthrax spores — were confiscated from a Swedish spy Baron Otto Karl von Rosen in Northern Norway in mid-winter 1917. It's shocking the Ukrainians & Byelorussia’s were left out (because they are Slavic?) as persecuted nations of the Soviet Union! Arguably the Ukrainian's suffered the most under Soviet rule: one third of the Ukraine population was lost through Stalin's engineered famine – & something like half of Byelorussia’s population, along with its vital intelligentsia - which is integral in promoting a national self awareness - were irrevocably “depleted”. And please note how I make the clear distinction between Russia, & the Soviet Union. As someone else pointed out, the Russians themselves suffered horrendously : 25 million lost through the Second World War; a whole class of people exterminated: farmers, intelligentsia, and middleclass...basically anyone that showed the slightest modicum of independent thought. Essentially, Stalin was an anti-people megalomaniac of epic proportions; he despised all people who didn’t agree with him, Russians included, & had paranoia the bordered on the schizophrenia. He was a Georgian man himself. So, if the book set out to give an accurate portrayal of Soviet barbarism, it is far from complete - & perhaps there is just the slightest whiff of an anti-Russian sentiment. And no, I am not Russian.

There was a comment about the Baltics and their politics regarding Russians as a national minority ::thedeceiver Please note that even Non-Estionan citizens who are using Russian as a native language have their one schools in Estonia. All Russians and their descendants from the first independence living in Estonia ( About 8 % of total population in pre war time) were granted automatically Estonian citizenship etc. If critics more concret details are appreciated. The hypocrisy of its authors is overwhelming. They simply ignore the fact that Russians were being persecuted as well as other ethnic groups and that the absolute majority of the people killed during the repressions was RUSSIAN. The Stalinist regime was not chauvinistic, it was simly anti-national; ethnic origin meant little for the regime, loyalty to communism was the thing that mattered. Deportations of minor peoples are errible acts of atrocity, but we should not forget that Russain people suffered like all others. Also the authors ignore the fact that Russians are a minority in Estonia and they are suffering from "blatant nationalism" backed by Estonian authorities who want to create a small monoethnical state dependent not on Russia (which is in decline) but on Germany (which is in its prime). A common policy for all of the Baltic states which even support nazism to demonstrate their independence, The Red Book does not include descriptions of attempts made by the Russian authorities and desperate people to improve the situation. Theauthors contine thinking that Russai is "a prison of nations". That, however, is not true. Some nations do disappear as a result of globalization. And perhaps the Russians will disappear in a century or so, much to the joy of the authors' descendants.

I found your web-site very interesting. I lived in Anchorage, Alaska for many years and my mother was born and raised on St.Lawerence Island and later in age moved to Nome, Alaska. I ammso glad to see a website such as this to explain the vastness of the former Russian Empire and Soviet State.Having read The Gulag Archipelago and related publications I think of the millions of inocent peoples sent to their certain deaths in the camps simply because they weren't Russian.I am amazed at the resilience of many of these groups and saddened by the cultural genocide that still goes on today.

The attribution of "Georgian Jews" to the linguistic grouping "Indo-European Peoples" would seem problematic, as Georgian Jews are neither linguistically nor ethnically "Indo-European": 1) The "mother tongue" of the Georgian Jews, according to your article, is Georgian, not an Indo-European language. 2) Assuming an ethnic classification of "Jews" as a coherent and homogenous group, the traditional language of Jewishness is Ancient Hebrew, the "mother tongue" of many Jews in the Old Testament era. This language belongs to the Semitic language group along with Arabic and Arhamaic.
